Permalink is one of the important factors on search engine optimization. If you want your blog to rank on a specific keyword, then you should put your target keywords as a part of your blog’s permalink.
If you are just starting to blog, or your blog is new and your blog is using the default wordpress (http://www.yourblog.com/?p=123) permalink page id system.. I encouraged you to change its permalink structure for better seo. But be informed that you may lost some existing trackbacks, if you have, and you will need to modify your on site page links, unless you install a special wordpress plugin to catch your previous trackbacks.
So how to change your wordpress permalink.. If you are using Wordpress 2.5+ heres the screenshot

I just simply love this (%category%/%postname%.htm) permalink structure because it is short, simple, categorized and specific..

Link exchange is good. But do it wisely… Read the Google linking guide. I stopped the link exchange practice since last year.. coz I found other ways to get incoming links, I am going to blog it soon..

What is robots.txt?

From my own definition hehe, ROBOtS.TXT is a piece of file that instructs and acknowledged by major Search engine bots, (Google, Yahoo, MSN, Askjeeves) which area and what files or directories of your website are restricted and don’t need to spider.
For example: If you have an image directory called “products_images” that you don’t want to appear in Google images. All you have to do is to add this line to your robots.txt

User-agent: Googlebot-Image
Disallow: /projects_images/

Benefits of having ROBOTS.TXT

# To avoid duplicate content
Did you know by default, your wordpress display some of your post repeatedly unless if you are using excerpts.
For example:
a copy of your latest post from the homepage, another copy from your date archive pages, another copy from its own post. You can minimized this by using robots.txt. A great robots.txt for seo wordpress sample by AskApache.com

# Minimize Bandwidth consumption
Another reason to keep a robots.txt on your wordpress is to minimized bandwidth usage. Unnecessary wordpress directories to cache like wp-admin, wp-includes, themes, cache, plugins, trackback, comments, and etc. Try to add this on your robots.txt:

Disallow: /wp-includes
Disallow: /wp-content/plugins

How to make a robots.txt

Very easy, no sweat, you may use your friendly Windows Notepad or Wordpad, but not MSWORD. Encode what parts of your site to add in robots.txt. Heres a copy of robots.txt from this site. Marhgil posted an interesting SEO post: An evil way how to get one way links, and how it works! Hehe. I just want to share my thoughts and to discuss it more too hehe. ;) The aim of this post is not to teach you how to make this one way link trick, but to become aware on this. So if you are going to link trade or if someone ask for a link trade. Do not be satified if you saw your link. Always check your link partner’s blog, blog rolls by viewing the HTML source code.

And check for the following:
rel=nofollow – Always check if your site url has a rel=nofollow attribute.
Example: <a href="http://www.yoursitedomain" rel="nofollow">your site domain</a>, if your site link from your link partner has a rel="nofollow" attribute, you are just wasting your site’s pagerank. Visit link condom for more info.


robots.txt – If someone ask for a link trade, always check his/her robots.txt if the reciprocal link page is listed on robots.txt Disallow pages . By default robots.txt is located on the root of a website domain.
Example: http://www.sitedomain/robots.txt
Heres a sample of robots.txt from this site. , Search engine bots (Google, MSN, Yahoo) are instructed not to follow links listed in a robots.txt file


<meta name="robots" content="index,nofollow"> – Just like robots.txt, creating a page with this meta tags will instruct the search engine bots to index the page but not to follow the links. Make sure your site links is placed on a page without this evil meta tags!


<IFRAME> – Another SEO trick used by most BH SEO bloggers to get one way links. They put the site links of their link partners inside an html file and call it using iframe. Then, they will list the link url of that html file in the robots.txt . Do not accept a link trade if your link is inside of an <iframe> page.

Page Redirection – A page redirection can be used to make those one way evil links. Putting the page redirection page inside a robots.txt will instruct SE Bots to stop crawling sites called by that page redirection.

Javascript / DHTML - Do not just accept the link trade if your site url was placed via: Javascript or DHTML. A Javascript document.write(”) or using Javascript event <a onclick(‘location.href=’). etc..

FLASH – Yes Flash, since Flash can be used to create outgoing links.. It can be also use to create those one way evil links. hehe
The lesson is make sure your site link from your link partner’s site is using a clean <a href=, tag.
