The free WordPress software from wordpress.org is one of the best blog platform when it comes to SEO. And one of the greatest feature of this software is the changeable permalink structure.
What is permalink? According to my own definition hehe, it is the complete website page address where a specific blog post or a website page can be accessed. Usually its a page URL generated from a CMS based website.
On this blog post, the permalink is:

Permalink is one of the important factors on search engine optimization. If you want your blog to rank on a specific keyword, then you should put your target keywords as a part of your blog’s permalink.
If you are just starting to blog, or your blog is new and your blog is using the default wordpress (http://www.yourblog.com/?p=123) permalink page id system.. I encouraged you to change its permalink structure for better seo. But be informed that you may lost some existing trackbacks, if you have, and you will need to modify your on site page links, unless you install a special wordpress plugin to catch your previous trackbacks.
So how to change your wordpress permalink.. If you are using WordPress 2.5+ heres the screenshot
Permalinks is just under SETTINGS if you are using WordPress 2.5+, and under OPTIONS if you are using the previous versions of WordPress.
So what is the best SEO Permalink? Based on my own experience and opinion the best wordpress permalink is:
%category%/%postname%.htm
So where to put this code:
I just simply love this (%category%/%postname%.htm) permalink structure because it is short, simple, categorized and specific..
By the way, %category%/%postname% is also a good SEO wordpress permalink. Do you know other good seo based wordpress permalink? Please post your thoughts about this post.

I’ve implemented the permalink as advsed in this post. Though it’s the first time I see it ending in .htm! Kinda a SEO trick?
January 26th, 2009 at 8:54 pm
I use /%category%/%postname%.htm.
Is there a way to remove the default /category/ with actual category/postname. for eg, in sidebar, it should be /diabetes/howexercise.htm should be the link for post and /diabetes/ for category page. I’ve tried with the technique given in http://www.askapache.com/seo/remove-category-from-wordpress-urls.html. but it had not worked. Anyone try this technique and feedback on this?

@Cadia Gail: Are you using WordPress 2.5+ ? If you are using the old versions the default is “category” but you can eliminate this tag if you are using higher versions of WordPress

Hi! What if I set as /%postname%/, would it result to a better SEO?
March 30th, 2009 at 5:25 pm
Thanks for the comments guys
Just want to share my PERSONAL opinions on using different permalink formats in WordPress.
If you blog on a single topic in your domain, I suggest you to use the permalink: /%postname%/
This will make your site domain rank well with your target topic easily.
If you blog on different topics, I suggest you to use:
/%category%/%postname%.htm
or
/%category%/%postname%
This will hint Search Engines to treat your blog post differently based from your category.
But heres my stand why
/%category%/%postname%.htm is better than /%category%/%postname%/
A .htm will inform search engines that your post is using a static .htm page. I don’t have a strong proof that static pages ranks well on search engine but for me a .htm file will give a strong point of topic focus compare to directory
yourblog.com/category/topic/ (a blog post in a directory structure)
yourblog.com/category/topic.htm (a blog post in a .htm file format)
And based on my own experience the permalink /%category%/%postname%.htm works well and gives me better traffic to all of my blogs.
March 30th, 2009 at 7:58 pm
Wow! Very well said! Since I’m into a multiple topic blog, you’re recommending /%category%/%postname%.htm. (I agree). As of now, I’m using /%postname%/ so if change it do you think will it result to a 404 Not Found or No Subject was Found?
Thank you

A fantastic read….very literate and informative. Many thanks….what theme is this you are using and also, where is your RSS button ?

It might be a good idea to leave a unique number in your permalinks. I often have posts with the same name and it can be troublesome unless you leave in date or post_id information. I currently use: /%category%/%post_id%/%postname%
