An Android is an open source operating system design for mobile and other devices created by Android Inc in 2003. But later on acquired by GOOGLE Inc on 2005.

Today Android is being used world wide as an operating in different Smartphones platform. Since Android is an open source system, many programmers are writing and selling their Android programs in Android Market.

What are the Android Versions

The Android system has a different upgrade versions, and every versions of Android has their own unique upgrade name.
They are

• Android version 2.0 also known as ECLAIR
• Android version 2.2 also known as FROYO
• Android version 2.3 also known as GINGERBREAD
• Android version 3.0 also known as HONEYCOMBO
• Android version 4.0 also known as ICE CREAM SANDWICH

What are the main features of a Smartphone handset running an Android phone?

Here are the basic features and specification of an Android phone.
An Android phone is able to support larger VGA display. An Android phone is using SQLite as it’s database to store data.
Majority of an Android phone are able to connect using GSM/EDGE, IDEN, CDMA, EV-DO, UMTS, Bluetooth, WiFi, LTE, NFC, and WiMAX. The SMS message system of an Android Phone is using a threaded messaging system.
The default Android browser is powered by Chrome’s V8 JavaScript engine to give user a faster web browsing experience.

An Android system supports different multimedia formats: MPEG-4 SP, AMR, AAC, HE-AAA, H.263, H.264 (3GP).
