30 Best Font Combinations from Canva You Can Download for Free

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve opened a blank Canva design, typed a headline, and then spent forty minutes scrolling the font list. The design was done in five. The font hunt ate the rest of the afternoon.

If that sounds familiar, this list is for you. These are 30 font pairings I’d actually use, and every font in them is a free Google Font you can download in a couple of clicks. Most of them also show up in Canva’s font dropdown, so you can test them there first.

Why Font Pairing Matters More Than You Think

A good font pairing does a quiet job. Nobody looks at a poster and says, “Wow, nice contrast between the heading and body typeface.” They just feel that it looks put together.

A bad pairing does the opposite. Two fonts that are almost the same but not quite create a weird tension, and your eye can’t settle. Two fonts that fight for attention make the whole design feel loud and messy.

After 15 years of doing design work, here’s the short version of what I look for:

  • Contrast. One font should clearly be the star (heading) and the other should clearly support it (body).
  • Readability first. If a font is gorgeous but you can’t read it at 16px, it’s a heading font only.
  • Two fonts, not three. Every extra font is another chance to make things look chaotic.

That’s really it. Everything below follows those three ideas.

How I Picked These Canva Font Pairings

I went for combinations that show up again and again in real designs: social posts, flyers, presentations, simple websites. Nothing too experimental. These are the safe, good-looking choices that work across most projects.

All 30 use fonts from Google Fonts, which means they’re free to download. Most Google Fonts are released under open licenses that allow commercial use, but I’d still glance at the license on each font’s page if you’re doing client work. It takes ten seconds.

One honest note: “best” is a matter of taste. I haven’t run a scientific test. These are the pairings I trust, and I’ve grouped them by mood so you can jump to the one that fits your project.

Elegant Serif and Sans Font Combinations

These are the ones I reach for when I want something polished. Think wedding invites, beauty brands, quote graphics, and anything that should feel a little more expensive.

1. Playfair Display + Montserrat The classic. Playfair’s high-contrast serif has real personality, and Montserrat stays out of its way. If you only remember one pairing from this post, make it this one.

2. Playfair Display + Lato Same heading, softer body. Lato is a little warmer and rounder than Montserrat, which works well for longer paragraphs.

3. Cormorant Garamond + Montserrat Thinner and more refined than Playfair. Great for luxury and fashion looks, but keep the heading large because the fine strokes can disappear at small sizes.

4. Lora + Raleway Lora feels friendly for a serif. Raleway gives it a clean, slightly stylish partner. Good for blogs and lifestyle content.

5. Libre Baskerville + Source Sans 3 Traditional and trustworthy. I’d use this for anything that needs to look serious, like a report cover or a consulting brand.

6. Cinzel + Lato Cinzel is all capitals with a Roman inscription feel. It’s dramatic, so use it for short titles only. Lato keeps the supporting text calm.

7. DM Serif Display + DM Sans These two were designed to sit together, so the pairing feels natural. DM Serif Display only comes in one weight, but it already looks bold, so that works in your favor.

Clean and Modern Font Pairings

If your design is for a tech brand, a startup, a presentation, or anything that should feel current and uncluttered, start here.

8. Montserrat + Open Sans Probably the most used pairing on the internet, and for good reason. It’s not exciting, but it works almost everywhere.

9. Poppins + Roboto Poppins has those geometric round shapes that look great in big bold headlines. Roboto is neutral and very readable at small sizes.

10. Space Grotesk + Inter This one has a techy, slightly quirky feel. I like it for crypto and AI related graphics, since Space Grotesk has just enough character to stand out.

11. Rubik + Karla Rubik has softly rounded corners, which makes it feel approachable. Karla adds a bit of a quirky, grotesque flavor to the body text.

12. Oswald + Lato Oswald is tall and condensed, so it fits a lot of words in a narrow space. Great for banners and YouTube thumbnails.

13. Poppins + Lora A modern sans heading with a serif body is a combination that surprises people because it works better than it sounds. Try it on a blog graphic.

14. Raleway + Lora Raleway’s thin, stylish letters on top and Lora’s sturdy text below. Very easy on the eyes.

Bold Display Fonts That Grab Attention

These are for headlines that need to shout. Posters, sale announcements, event flyers, thumbnails. A quick warning: most of these display fonts only come in a single weight, so there’s no separate Bold option. They’re already heavy by design.

15. Bebas Neue + Montserrat Tall, all caps, and very clean. If you’ve scrolled social media for more than five minutes, you’ve seen Bebas Neue.

16. Abril Fatface + Poppins A fat, high-contrast headline font with a friendly sans underneath. Magazine energy.

17. Anton + Roboto Anton is heavy and condensed. It’s loud in the best way. Use it large and don’t overthink the rest.

18. Archivo Black + Archivo Same family, different weights. This is a safe way to get strong contrast without worrying about whether two fonts match.

19. Fjalla One + Open Sans Fjalla One is a bit narrower and less aggressive than Anton. Good for news style headlines.

20. Pacifico + Montserrat A casual script with a clean sans partner. I’d use Pacifico sparingly, maybe a single word, because it gets tiring in long titles.

Friendly and Casual Font Combinations

Softer shapes, rounder letters. These suit food content, kids’ material, wellness brands, and anything meant to feel welcoming.

21. Quicksand + Open Sans Quicksand is rounded and light, almost bubbly. Open Sans keeps the body text grounded and readable.

22. Nunito + Nunito Sans A family pairing again, with rounded terminals on the heading and a plainer cut for the text. Gentle and easy.

23. Josefin Sans + Lato Josefin has a vintage, geometric look with an unusually low x-height. It’s charming in headlines and a little awkward in paragraphs, which is why Lato is there.

Editorial and Easy-to-Read Pairings

These are my picks for blogs, newsletters, ebooks, and any design with real paragraphs of text. Readability wins here.

24. Merriweather + Open Sans Merriweather was built for reading on screens. Very sturdy, very clear.

25. Raleway + Merriweather Flip it around: a light, stylish heading over a solid serif body. Feels like a modern magazine.

26. Montserrat + Merriweather Bold geometric headline, sturdy serif body. It’s a strong, confident look that I use often for article graphics.

27. Roboto Slab + Roboto Slab serif and its own sans sibling. No guesswork, no clash.

28. Bitter + Source Sans 3 Bitter is a slab serif designed for comfortable reading. Together with Source Sans, it’s practical and a little underrated.

29. Libre Franklin + Libre Baskerville A newspaper feel. A sans heading with a classic serif body, the reverse of what most people try first.

30. Inter + Lora Inter is built for screens and Lora adds a bit of warmth. This is a good fit for dashboards, reports, or anything that’s text heavy.

My Personal Favorites From the List

If I had to pick, and you did ask for a “best” list, here’s where I’d start.

For almost any general project, I’d go with Playfair Display + Montserrat. It’s the pairing I’m least likely to regret.

For anything techy or crypto related, Space Grotesk + Inter. It has the right kind of attitude.

For a thumbnail or promo that has to stop a scroll, Bebas Neue + Montserrat or Anton + Roboto.

For long text, Merriweather + Open Sans. Boring on paper, great in practice.

How to Download These Fonts for Free from Google Fonts

The process is simple, and it’s the same for every font on this list.

  1. Click a font name above to open its Google Fonts page.
  2. Click Get font, then Download all. You’ll get a ZIP file.
  3. Unzip it. Inside you’ll usually find either static font files (like Bold, Regular, Italic) or a single variable font file, sometimes both.
  4. Install the fonts on your computer. On Windows, right-click the file and choose Install. On Mac, double-click and choose Install Font.
  5. Restart whatever design app you’re using so it picks up the new fonts.

If you want a quick shortcut, the static files are the safer choice for Photoshop, Illustrator, or Figma. Variable fonts are great, but older software doesn’t always handle them well.

Using These Fonts Inside Canva

Here’s the part where I’d rather be upfront than overpromise. Canva’s font library is large, and many of the fonts on this list are available in it already, but availability can change. The fastest way to check is to type the font name into the font search box inside the editor.

If a font isn’t there, you can upload your own, but as far as I know that feature has been tied to a paid Canva plan. Check what your account supports before you plan a whole project around a font that isn’t in the library.

On the free plan, the practical move is to stick with the pairings where both fonts are already in Canva’s list and treat the download step as a bonus for work you do outside Canva.

A Few Font Pairing Mistakes I Keep Seeing

Even good fonts can look bad when they’re used the wrong way. These are the slip-ups I notice most.

Using two similar fonts. If both fonts are sans serif and look 90% alike, it looks like a mistake instead of a choice. Either use one family in two weights or pick something clearly different.

Making everything bold. Bold is supposed to create hierarchy. When every line is bold, nothing stands out.

Tiny, thin text on a busy background. Light weights like Cormorant Garamond or Raleway Thin need space and contrast. Put them over a photo and they vanish.

Mixing too many decorative fonts. One script or display font per design is plenty. Two is a fight.

Forgetting line spacing. A great pairing can still feel cramped. A line height somewhere around 1.4 to 1.6 for body text usually helps.

Final Thought Before You Start Designing

Here’s something I wish someone told me earlier in my career. You don’t need a perfect font. You need a consistent one.

Pick a pairing from this list, stick with it across your posts, your thumbnails, and your website, and people will start recognizing your work before they even read the name. That’s what branding really is, and it costs you nothing but a few minutes of picking.

Bookmark the ones you like, test two or three in your next design, and don’t be afraid to drop the one that doesn’t feel right. If you want to see all 30 side by side with the sample text, I put together a one page reference with download links for every font. Start with whichever mood fits your next project and go from there.
